Why Do Some Guitar Pickups Sound Great And Others Sound Dull? by Todd Witzken

Let’s start off by stating that what is regarded a good guitar pickup by one guitarist might not be considered nice by another. This is all about the search for the best tone and everybody has a totally different opinion of what the right tone is.

A well constructed pickup is just like a fine meal. It’s the combination of many different ingredients blended together to complete the magic recipe. Too much garlic or the wrong temperature and your meal can be poor, badly applied coil windings or incorrect magnets (to name just two ingredients) and it’s goodbye to your pickup’s tone. There are various aspects that need to all come together and the various guitar pickup manufacturers seem to have their unique take on it.

It’s not simple to get that indefinable ‘special’ tone. Even the much sort after Gibson PAF (Patent Applied For) humbucker pickups of the late 50′s were not all great. The good examples from that era are almost certainly the best sounding pickups you’ll ever hear, but there were definitely some duds from that period. The other consideration is of course your style of playing. For example a jazz player may well prefer a more mellow sound with lower output and maybe an Alnico 4 magnet. Alternatively a rocker could well be looking for much higher output centered around a ceramic magnet.
