Without these clever little things it would be impossible for a guitar to be heard in substantial venues, and where might that have left the ground-breaking Jimi Hendrix?
1. The first elctro-magnetic guitar pickup was invented in 1924 by Lloyd Loar of the Gibson Guitar firm.
2. At the center of a pickup is a magnet. This specific magnet is normally alnico in construction, in other words, made up of aluminium (Al), nickel (Ni) and cobalt(Co), hence al-ni-co.
3. The plastic type bobbins of a vintage 1950s humbucker pickup were constructed from butyrate plastic.
4. The humbucking pickup was the invention of Gibson’s Seth Lover in the ’50s and in 1955 Gibson proceeded to file for the official patent for his new humbucker. Because of this, the Gibson ‘Patent Applied For’ PAF humbucker was created. This particular pickup was an imaginative design which was able to remove the electronic hum interference, or in other words ‘buck the hum’. This was a great improvement over the single coil design as much as sound quality goes.
5. A humbucking pickup can have upwards of 10,000 turns off coil wire. This specific wire is almost as fine as human hair.
6. Many types of pickups are wax potted. This is the procedure of sealing the coils in a wax and paraffin mix. The objective of this is to avoid unwanted microphonics and electronic squeals which can occur if coil windings and the pickups in general, are not sealed tightly. Interestingly, the legendary 1950′s PAF pickup discussed above was never wax potted.
7. Currently various Strat style guitars are sold with the middle pickup RWRP (reverse wound, reverse polarity). This means that though the pickups may hum on their own, this specific hum gets cancelled if the middle pickup becomes combined with the neck or bridge pickup with the selector switch in the “in-between” positions.
8. The bridge pickup on a Fender Telecaster has a steel plate aligned underneath it that helps improve the bass response.
9. The six rods in a Fender Stratocaster pickup are magnets. The staggered heights that most of them have is present to balance the string volume.
10. The P-90 is a big single coiled style pickup that has a strong tone along the lines of a humbucker. Due to the appearance of the two styles they have attained the names ‘soapbar’ and ‘dogear’.
